This shows that in the religion they are strong and brave, the men must stand extreme pain, many times. it shows that the men really Care about how they are seen in in society. The bullet ant has the most painful sting known to man, and they endure 10 minutes of hundreds of the ants stinging there hands, afterward they must stay in the line while and sing while the other men are getting the gloves of ants on. Not only do they withstand this pain they have to repeat it 20 times over several months or even years. This shows the power and strenth of the men.

The young girl is given nothing to numb the feeling in her mouth before he takes a rock and begins to hack away. In mentawai tradition the woman of the house get their teeth chiseled down into sharp triangles. When the teeth are chiseled they are seen as more beautiful. Also they are seen as being true to their husband. When the teeth are chiseled the women are in lots of pain but afterwards they are happy, because they know that they will make their family proud. I believe they do this because it will make others happy not their selves. This shows that their appearance to others is very important.

This quote is showing that in the christian religion in order to grow up you must also grow closer to "the lord" or god. In this religion they care very much about how you look at and receive god as an everyday part of your life, if you do not then you will never truly be grown up. You will be old, but not truly a man or woman, just a mature boy or girl. Growing up close to your lord is seen as the correct thing to do, this is because without god we are"tempted" to do the wrong thing, with the lord you will make the right choices and live a happy adult life.

The Matausa believe that if a boy doesn't complete the blood initiation, he may suffer the consequences his entire life. He will never be seen as a real man, and he won’t experience the vigor and strength that the others have. That’s why boys are eager to go through the initiation, regardless of pain, to become warriors.
In the matausa religion The men put themselves through immense pain in order to rid themselves of the blood of their mother, her "woman blood" must be completely removed. The Blood initiation includes, making themselves throw up, to rid the digestive system of woman, they make their noses bleed to rid their heads of women, and finally the prick their tongue with a tiny bow and arrow to rid the taste of food prepared by a woman. Once this is complete the men sing and dance and celebrate now that they are truely strong, fully men, no remnants of woman left behind. Another thing, all the blood that spills out is washed away by the shallow stream they stand in, so not only is the woman blood removed, it is taken away never to return. They believe that having a woman's blood in them makes them weak, and unable to become a warrior.
I think that this is important because most of us are closed minded about becoming men and women, we think that just by turning 18 we are grown up, we don't even take a second to look at growing up in other religions. There is so much information on so many different religions that all have different ways of growing up. What i just wrote about above is only scratching the surface of such a deep topic.
